Information : The complete details for filling the form , eligibility and other formalities are available through newspaper and the official website of UPSC in the month of February. To appear and clear the UPSC exam is prerequisite to become a civil servant and for this the complete details is available through Union Public Service Commission official website (http://www.upsconline.nic.in/) and newspaper during the month of February. The deadlines for submitting application is in the month of March.

There are three stages in the selection of UPSC ( IAS,IFS & IPS) as mentioned below
  • Preliminary which include (CSAT- civil service aptitude test)
  • The Main Exam ( Written descriptive type of exam)
  • An interview

Eligibility

Eligibility The eligibility for IFS, IAS and IPS are same. Once the candidate clear the UPSC exam, they are categorized according to their rank and they are allotted the different stream like IAS ,IPS or IFS and have to complete their training.

  • The main eligibility condition is Citizenship , candidate must be an Indian citizen
  • Secondly he or she should possess a Bachelor’s degree in any stream.
  • Another eligibility criterion is that the candidate should be between 21-30 age group.

To become civil servant one needs to clear the UPSC ( Union Public Service Commission) Exam and secure a good rank to get selected. Every year millions of aspirant of civil services give this exam, out of which only approx 500 vacancies are there to fulfil. The UPSC conduct CSAT( Civil Service Aptitude Test) every year. This exam is considered to be tough in nature and really hard to crack. Only determination and continuous hard work is the key to achieve success for this exam.

INFORMATION ABOUT UPSC

  • IAS : IAS defined as Indian Administrative Services. Among these IAS is very popular. Every aspirant of civil services desires for this stream of service. Only the top 100 can become IAS officers. These officers than holds the positions of DC,DM or get secretarial post in different ministries.
  • IPS : India Police Services are the true convener of law and order. The selected officer are trained as officers in Police and other law executioner agencies.
  • IFS : Officers of Indian Foreign services are representatives of our country in foreign country. They are given the positions of secretaries, Ambassadors, High commissioners etc. They are also representatives in international Organizations such as UN.

  • Paper-1 ( carry 200 marks )
  • Duration :- 2 hours
  • Current events of national and international importance
  • History of India and Indian National Movement
  • Indian and World Geography- Physical , Social , Economic, Geography of India and the World
  • Indian Polity and Governance- Constitution, Political System , Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights, Issues eyc
  • Economic and Social Development- Sustainable Development , Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc
  • General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio- Diversity and Climate change that do not require subject specialization General science
Syllabus for paper 2-(carry 200 marks) Duration:- 2 hours
  • Comprehension
  • Interpersonal skills including communication skills
  • logical reasoning and analytical ability
  • Decision making and problem solving
  • General mental ability
  • Basic numeracy( numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude etc.) class 10th level
  • Data Interpretation ( Charts, Graphs, Tables , Data sufficiency)- class 10th level

The exam is only qualifying in nature and the selection is purely based on the merit. The first paper (General Studies) is qualifying for the Mains, one has to secure 33% in paper first.

Points to be noted
  • The Civil Service Aptitude Test of the Civil Service Prelim exam is a qualifying in nature. A candidate have to secure 33% marks to appear in the Mains exam.
  • The Preliminary Examination includes two papers of multiple choice and carry maximum 300 marks each.
